The City of Garden City - Department of Community Resources is hiring for an open AmeriCorps VISTA position!

Job Title: SEED to Career Project Coordinator

Employment period: 08/20/2018-08/20/2019

Project Background:

Garden City is a small community just west of Detroit that was hit hard by the recession and the collapse of the auto industry in 2008.  Ten years later, the community is in the process of recovering. In order to cultivate financial stability in the community, the City of Garden City, Garden City Public Schools and a local financial institution will partner to implement a Children’s Savings Account program to benefit 258 incoming kindergartners starting in the Fall of 2018. These savings accounts will allow these young people to gain actual liquid assets as well as skills and knowledge about creating financial stability.

We are looking for a passionate and motivated individual to coordinate this program and to help us bring sustainable, economic empowerment to Garden City residents. 

Job Description:

The SEED (Saving, Education, Entrepreneurial, and Development) to Career Project Coordinator will complete a wide range of tasks in order to coordinate Garden City’s new Children’s Savings Account (CSA) program. Some of these tasks include: - Reviewing and revising the SEED to Career Service Steering Committee’s accomplishments by researching other successful CSA programs and business plans - Developing SEED to Career program materials, developing a strategic plan for marketing and outreach -Building partnerships with community members and organizations in order to promote the program and to gain program support -Volunteer/Stakeholder recruitment -Creating a plan for evaluating the CSA program and the planning process -Participating in SEED to Career sustainability and expansion planning meetings.

Through this program, the VISTA member will become a vital member of the Garden City Department of Community Resources. This is an ideal opportunity for recent graduates to build their resumes, and to gain experience in local government and non-profit management.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree preferred. High school diploma, or equivalent certificate, with some college courses required. Must be 18 years old or older. Must pass a background check. Must have a vehicle and a valid driver’s license.

Program Benefits: Bi-weekly stipend, choice of Education Award or End of Service Stipend upon successful completion of service, Federal Student Loan Forbearance, extensive training opportunities.

Living Allowance: 

$511.57/ bi-weekly stipend = Total $12,277.72

End of Service Award: 

At the beginning of their service year, the member can choose between an Educational Award or the End-of-Service Stipend to receive at the end of their service year.

The Educational Award is $5,920 which can be used to pay qualified student loans, or can be saved in a trust for up to seven years to be applied to future educational expenses. This award is able to be used at any Title IV educational institution.

The End of Service Stipend is a $1,800 cash stipend paid at the successful completion of service. Both End-of-Service Awards are subject to taxation.

Federal Student Loans:

Members can choose to put their loans into forbearance during their VISTA term and any interest accrued may be reimbursed upon successful completion of service.

Members may also be eligible for Perkins Loan forgiveness: up to 15% if you choose to receive the end-of-service stipend instead of the Education Award.

Healthcare Benefits:

All AmeriCorps VISTA members are eligible to participate in one of two Healthcare Benefit Programs:

AmeriCorps VISTA Healthcare Allowance – To participate, you must currently have or have completed enrollment in other primary health care coverage outside of AmeriCorps VISTA

AmeriCorps VISTA Healthcare Benefit Plan – For members legally exempt from maintaining health care coverage during their term of service

Travel and Expense Reimbursement

Relocation Allowance:  

For members moving more than 50 miles for service, a relocation allowance of up to $500 will be offered.
