The Department of Public Works is responsible for the maintenance of streets, water distribution system, sanitary and storm sewers. The Department also maintains all building and grounds. This includes all the city parks along with the athletic fields and trees in the right-of-ways.
The Department performs coordination of the City Garbage and Recycling Programs. The DPS also oversees ordinance enforcement matters.
WATER RESTRICTIONS
An outdoor water restriction is in effect from May 15 t0 September 15 to help control rate hikes from Detroit Water and Sewer. Property with even numbered addresses are encouraged to engage in outdoor water usage on even numbered days of the month and odd numbered addresses on odd numbered days. All outdoor watering is discouraged from 4-9 p.m.
RECYCLING
FREE voluntary curbside recycling is provided to Garden City residents through GFL. Residents who don't already have a specific recycling container can receive one by calling DPS at 734-793-1800.
The Recycling center located at the Garden City Department of Public Services has been eliminated.
LARGE ITEM TRASH/CARPETING PICK UP
The collection of large bulky waste, such as appliances and furniture, will continue to be part of your solid waste program. You may set out large bulky items on your regular scheduled service day for collection, there is no need to call and schedule a pickup. Please place large bulky items out separate from other products for collection and have out by 7 a.m.
FYI: Please remove the doors and racks from refrigerators and freezers prior to setting out for collection. Also, GFL is responsible to make sure Freon is extracted according to current environmental standards. The weight of carpeting is limited to 60 pounds should be no longer than four feet and tied/bundled.
