Citizens Academy

What is it?

The Garden City Police Department’s Citizen Academy is designed to give the public a working knowledge of the police department. The academy will consist of classes once a week for 10 weeks. Each week the classes will cover different areas of the police department.

Who is eligible to attend?

The minimum age is 21. Applicants may either live in the city or have some affiliation with city (example; church, business owner, etc).

Our Purpose

The Garden City Police Department would like to take the opportunity to build a better relationship with our community. The Citizen’s Academy offers various courses of instruction that allows attendees to better understand how their police department functions. Through this education process, you will be exposed to all aspects of policing, training, policies, and laws along with a look into the decision-making process, that officers face daily.

Many diverse topics will be covered; such as patrol duties, traffic, and drunk driving enforcement. Are you aware of the special assignments we have such as C.R.T., K-9, SWAT, and many more. The department's training officers will educate attendees on firearms, defense tactics, and chemical defense sprays. The detective bureau has a special segment on investigations. What is it like to be a police officer, what are their responsibilities? How much do you know about criminal law and local ordinances? Instruction in these and many more areas will consist of lectures, demonstrations, tours, and hands-on experience.
